ReNEW Schools Takes Extra Steps to Help Troubled Youth
Around the country, about one in five children suffer from a mental health disorder. In New Orleans, experts say that figure could be even higher, given the trauma induced by Hurricane Katrina and the city’s violence. Having a mental illness makes it that much harder to concentrate in class. Still, some of the city’s schools are doing what they can to help these children learn. After countless setbacks, New Orleans teens earn their high school diplomas
ReNEW Accelerated High School is a self-paced program for students who have fallen behind. High schools like ReNEW are becoming more common locally and nationwide, with at least three similar programs opening in the New Orleans area in the last five years. All rely at least partly on online courses to help students catch up. Supporters say the schools are a much-needed option for students who are on the verge of dropping out.
